Cinnamon Rolls or Elephant Ears???

May 8, 2015

Ready-made puff pastry dough can make easy and elegant dessert, appetizers and treats in no time. There is no need to make puff pastry. When I had too much time on my hand I tried it and believe me going to the market and picking up a pack or two to stockpile in the freezer will make you a very happy camper and queen of the elegant and tasty treats.

  • ¾  cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon of clove
  • 1 sheet readymade puff pastry, defrosted (vegan or regular)
  • 1 ½ tablespoon of soften butter unsalted

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and combine the sugar, cinnamon and clove in a bowl and set aside.
Dust a large flat surface with flour. Most time I will use a large circular kneading board. Unfold the sheet of puff pastry and dust the top side of the pastry with flour. With a rolling pin, lightly roll the dough until it’s a 13-inch and remove any excess flour. Spread the soften butter evenly over the buttered dough.

Now spread the sugar, clove and the cinnamon and spread it evenly on the puff pastry. Fold the sides of the square toward the center so they go halfway to the middle. Fold them again so the two folds meet at the middle of the dough. Then fold one half over the other half as though closing a book. You will have 6 layers. Slice the dough into 3/8-inch slices (slightly thinner if you do not like large cookies) and place the slices, cut side up, on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

Bake the cookies for 6 minutes, then turn and bake for another 5 minutes, until caramelized on the other side. Transfer to a baking rack to cool. This is the time to shape your cookies. I found that sometimes the cookies will become a little unglued.   While the cookies are still warm if need to, you can pinch the cookies and form them into the ear. This is a enjoyable version of a cinnamon roll without all of the work.  Also, if you do not wish to use butter, you can use EVOO and this becomes a vegan treat.  Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!
